Mousetrapper has invested in Svensk Kolinlagring in 2024 and purchased carbon credits to support efforts to increase carbon sequestration in Swedish agriculture. The goal is to create long-term changes in farming by using methods that capture more carbon as pastures are allowed to recover over an extended period. This, combined with abundant winter biomass, has positive effects on soil health and biodiversity. An exciting initiative that contributes to fight climate change.
Cows That Revitalize the Ecosystem
One example of this is Sjövången farm outside Kristianstad. A KRAV-certified farm that breeds Angus cattle, where the goal is to transform the entire ecosystem, not just what lies within the fences.
To promote carbon sequestration, a special grazing technique is used where the animals are regularly moved, allowing the land time to recover. It can take anywhere from a month to a year before the cows return. By letting the land rest as much as possible, soil microbiology thrives, birds gain nesting habitats, and insects are attracted to blooming plants.
2024 – A Fantastic Grass Year
There was plenty of pasture in 2024, and efforts were made to extend the grazing season to make the grass last as long as possible. The first grass of the season is usually too tender and low on protein relative to what the animals need and benefit from. However, when grazed together with older, coarser grass, it creates a better balance. Thanks to preserving pasture from the previous year until the new grass started growing, the cows could begin grazing as early as April, benefiting from the mix of old and new grass.
At Mousetrapper, we find it inspiring to see how traditional knowledge is being combined with the latest research to reduce our climate impact.
